UppsalaSince long Uppsala have been an university town with an old heritage. On the east side of the stream, Fyrisån, crossing the city lie the oldest parts from 16:th century. There you'll find the dome, the old university building, the castle and many narrow alleys between them blocks. On the other side of Fyrisån the more modern parts of the city is spread over the Uppsala-plain. |

| Just north of the city lies Gamla Uppsala (Old Uppsala). It's the medieval
location for the city. There lie the Uppsala Högar, burial mounds,
risen over the kings that ruled in the time when Sweden grew to one single
nation. That was back in the days of the Vikings. Just by the mounds it
is said that the great pagan temple was located and by it the sacrificial
grove. There in the the Oak they every ninth year sacrified to the gods
nine of each species: nine horses, nine humans...
Now days the people in Uppsala have rid them selves of the ancient ways and many study at the university, do scientific research or high technology development. That's quite naturally considering the closeness to the university and only one hour to the capitol, Stockholm. Beside the many Nobel prize winners, there are quite a few famous people from the older days. Among them Carl von Linné and Anders Celsius are most internationally known. In the region you also find Pharmacia and other multinational companies and a highly developed industry. And of course Telekonsult AB |
